Be gentle with yourself

claudiavandekamp

Sometimes we need little steps first, otherwise we overrun ourselves.

The other day a client told me that she is trying to do something about her always busy mind.

“ I am trying to do Yoga and meditation and dancing and stress reduction and… But I am not really getting anywhere. It feels like I am even more exhausted than before.”

All of these are wonderful practices to switch your attention from your busy mind into your body. But for an overactive nervous system another action might just be too much in the beginning. Especially if you do something that requires preparation like changing of clothes or scenery.

In this case start with something simple.

When you realise that your mind is running circles like crazy, stop whatever you are doing at the moment and take a breath.

Realise, ah, my mind is running now. And breathe again.

Then give your body some gentle touch.

Place one or both hands on your heart or your belly. Put your hands on your shoulders. Rub your back. Touch or massage your feet.

And breathe.

Just that.

For one minute.

Or a few minutes.

Be gentle with yourself.

The next time, when you recognise that your mind is overactive, do it again.

Maybe longer.

Start stretching your body a little bit.

So your nervous system can calm down.

Slowly.

In an appropriate time.

Be gentle with yourself.
