Routines = Structure = Grounding = Feeling Safe

claudiavandekamp

This morning I realised how important my morning routine is for me. And how it sets the tone for the day.

My morning routine starts with having a shower and walking my dog. We go out for a walk, no matter what. For an hour our an hour and a half at least. He loves to run freely, up and down the hills, through the olives, along the beach. I just love to put one feet after the other and move my body. Breathing. Feeling the soil under my bare feet. I let my thoughts run, sometimes I get ideas and inspiration. Sometimes I just breathe.

Sometimes I don’t want to get up. When it’s ugly outside. But I still do it. Yes, I do it for the dog, but also for me. Because afterwards I always feel better. ALWAYS.

And, the first hours of the day are just for me, my body, and my dog. No matter what. I don’t give sessions before 11 AM. And I don’t open up my laptop before 11 AM. That is my commitment to myself and that is self-care.

It is also structure. Although I love being spontaneous and follow the flow through the day, structure is important. It is grounding and balancing. It makes us feel safe. Especially our nervous system. That loves structure and grounding and feeling safe as well. Without it, there would also be no flow.

What are your routines, your structure, your grounding? What makes you feel safe?

And if you don’t have routines, how could you start? It doesn’t have to be a big thing.

Maybe just start with 5 minutes of conscious breathing after waking up.

And feel the difference.
